Cardinal Lobelia, Lobelia cardinalis (also known as Cardinal Flower, and Red Lobelia), is a striking perennial herbaceous plant native to Groton, particularly found in wetlands, along stream banks, and in marshes. It belongs to the Campanulaceae family and is known for its vibrant red flowers, which resemble the robes of Roman Catholic cardinals, hence its common name.
This flowering plant typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet and produces lance-shaped, deep green leaves arranged alternately along the stem. The flowers are the highlight of Cardinal Lobelia. They are tubular, bright red, and borne on spikes. Each flower measures about 1 to 2 inches in length. The blooming period usually occurs in late summer to early fall, attracting pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. Native to Massachusetts, Cardinal Lobelia thrives in moist to wet soil conditions and prefers partial shade to full sun exposure. It is often found in naturalistic garden settings, rain gardens, or near water features.
Cardinal Lobelia is relatively easy to grow given the right conditions. It prefers consistently moist, fertile soil with good drainage. Sandy loam or loamy soil types are ideal. While it can tolerate partial shade, Cardinal Lobelia blooms best when planted in areas that receive full sun to partial shade. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture. Propagation is done through division or from seeds. Seeds should be started indoors before the last frost date and transplanted outdoors once the danger of frost has passed. It is important to deadhead spent flowers to encourage prolonged blooming. Pruning may be necessary to maintain shape and control growth.
Cardinal Lobelia adds a vibrant splash of color to garden borders, bog gardens, and pond edges. It pairs well with other moisture-loving plants such as astilbe, ferns, and hostas. Due to its attractiveness to pollinators, it can be incorporated into wildlife gardens or naturalistic plantings aimed at supporting biodiversity.
